Methodology
The project set out to use a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative content analysis of media terminology with qualitative content analysis of narrative and thematic elements.
For the quantitative analysis, keywords and phrases (e.g., "deaf," "hearing-impaired," "deaf-mute", "hard-of-hearing", "hearing loss", etc...) will be tracked for frequency across multiple news sources including The Straits Times, Mothership, etc....
For the qualitative component, content from selected articles will be analysed to reveal underlying intentions and attitudes of journalists and the specific framings of deaf identities and sign languages in Singapore. Qualitative Content Analysis (Mayring, 2022; Kuckartz & Radiker, 2023) will be employed to identify themes and ideologies in these portrayals with the analysis supported by Nvivo.
