Why this Study?

In Singapore, I observed language ideologies among deaf, hard-of-hearing, and hearing people. My PhD research focused on the language-teacher identities of deaf sign language instructors in Singapore.

My interest in this topic grew from my experience as a teacher of deaf students in Australia, as well as my own ongoing construction and reconstruction of identity as a deaf person through my own international mobility living in different countries. I also encountered similar ideologies among deaf translators while working in sign language Bible translation in the United States and travelling internationally.

To complement my dissertation findings, I explored how Singapore newspapers frame deaf identities and sign languages. This study, In the Public Eye: Media Narratives of Deaf Identities and Sign Language(s) in Singapore, confirms and enriches the narratives gathered through qualitative interviews during my PhD research.
